The options are endless, and can be as confusing and anxiety producing as choosing a cellular phone plan. I feel you! But let me give you some things to think about, and hopefully it will make the decision a little easier.
Step 1. Start with the end in mind.
When it is all said and done, what would you like to be holding in your hands? A ready-to-hang framed print, an album or a book, or individual printed images? Are digital images important to you? Learn what products the photographer is offering. I believe the reason you hire a professional photographer is to help you create something not only tangible for your home, but also something you will cherish for years to come. Insure the photographer can do that.
Step 2. Price Point.
You will find every price level and every skill level photographing senior pictures. Just because they are cheap doesn't make them bad, and just because they are expensive doesn't make them good! Do not be afraid to ask how much experience they have. Find someone who is recommended and look at a large amount of their work, not just the select ones on their web site (because, you know, we only put our best work on the site!). Insure you are attracted to the work. As far as pricing goes: It should be simple and straight forward without a lot of choices.
Step 3. The Experience.
Once you find a photographer that creates what you want to purchase and is the right price, get references. Ask people about their photography session and sales session experiences. This is a large investment in time and money. You want the experience to be enjoyable, relaxed, and easy.
